Giant Australian cuttlefish are now hatching across the Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone in South Australia’s Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park. This follows a strong breeding season, with an estimated 64,000 cuttlefish gathering to spawn along this rocky reef habitat. To mitigate the risk from the harmful algal bloom, the State and Federal governments installed a bubble curtain to protect more than 50,000 eggs - a precaution that hasn’t needed to be activated. Over the next few weeks, most eggs wit

The Cuttlefish. Where do we even start when talking about how cool cuttlefish are? Aside from being able to change colour, having 3 hearts, and blue-green blood, even their eyes and pupils are unique. As it turns out, their W-shaped pupils stretch more than 180 degrees so they can see what’s in front and behind them at the same time, and this ‘wavy’ shape helps them to control the density of light that enters, allowing them to focus on prey in varying light conditions on the Reef. So, if you do

A close call. The cuttlefish and the shark. At first glance, the cuttlefish looks like a pretty easy meal. It’s squishy, stubby, and seemingly defenceless. But the cuttlefish doesn't give up so easily. They have been forced to get creative in their defenses. Like becoming shape shifting camouflage experts with incredible eyesight. 📽 www.instagram/alanna_murph | Master Reef Guides

Cuttlefish light show. ✨️ When it comes to changing one's skin color, the cuttlefish outshines even the chameleon. In the blink of an eye, they can switch from camouflage to a dazzling light display. This light display is their way of communicating, saying "Hey girl, come over here" in an attempt to impress the females or "Back away, you're too close" to deter rivals or threats. Michael Holliday (IG: thedivingholliday) filmed this incredible encounter whilst on a Minke Whale Trip with Pro Dive C

Electronic cloak ✨️👾 Cuttlefish are quite the cephalopod communicators! With their skin, that is. Color-changing is a very useful mechanism for cuttlefish: not only it enables them to hide in plain sight, but it is also a hunting tool and a means of communication. They can do this with their skin because of the millions of chromatophores they possess, each of which can be expanded and contracted to transform their appearance in a fraction of a second. 📽 www.instagram.com/nico.oceanico | Master

🎥: bugDreamer.com // Night dive with a baby cuttlefish in the Flores Sea! Cuttlefish utilize their excellent eyesight in addition to camouflage to increase their survival. Light-emitting cells called photophores allow for bioluminescence in many cephalopods, which may be used to confuse or startle predators, or potentially as a lure to attract prey. Unclassified Data on Instagram: "Hovering above the reef, the cuttlefish doesn’t just hide—it performs. In seconds, its skin blooms with ridges, bumps, and soft coral-like hues, mirroring the reef so perfectly that predators and prey pass it by. This is active camouflage at its finest, powered by specialized skin cells reacting to light, texture, and movement. By turning perception into a survival tool, the cuttlefish proves that evolution can favor illusion over force. #Cuttlefish #LivingCamouf
